Karnas Vineyards from Bodrum – The Turkish St Tropez

Karnas Vineyards from Bodrum – The Turkish St Tropez

Syrah, Petite Sirah or Shiraz…three different names for the same wine! Even the kind…masculine or feminine…Le Syrah or La Syrah can be different! Well what a consecration, this is the minimum that we can say about one huge grape loved by everyone around the world. After years of research they finally announce that Syrah was not coming from Syria or China, not even Turkey (sorry guys), but simply where this grape produced its best, the Rhône valley in France… “Kokoriko!” It gives a wine with tanin, black pepper spices, purple colour and can be kept for years for bonification. We find it in Australia, in California, in South Africa, in Washington state, in Chile, many other places in the world and for some years in our country, Turkey. Especially from the Karnas Vineyard where Syrah is giving its best….the 2014 I have tasted is dark purple, like eating a big bunch of red, sweet, dark fruits; very juicy like cherries and blackberries, wild herbs, full body with a very long finish. I drank it at 14 degrees but still I advise to serve it around 15/16 degrees especially during hot summer. I know it is going to be hard but keep a few bottles on the side for your old days…...

The food and service is remarkable but the best bit for me is they have their own house wines which is just amazing! Imagine a blend like Bordeaux made by their friends at Bilinger 7 which I told you about a few weeks ago. I was really impressed by their red wines. The first one is called ‘Sotiriyu’ and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Soft tanin and loads of blackberry fruits with a perfect balance of alcohol, tanin and acidity; a perfect “new world wine style. The second wine is called ‘Simétra’ blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Bordeaux style       . It was the same 2012 vintage as the first one but very different in taste; younger, lighter and more acidic. Perfect for a lunch time while Sotiriyu, more complex is for the evening. You should visit if you are able. When you go be sure to ask for Ibrahim the Maître d’hôtel or the manager Mr Ismet Bursali, both very nice guys. Bon Appêtit p.s. If you are going, here is the map...
7 Bilgeler Lassos 2012

7 Bilgeler Lassos 2012

[fb_like url=”” style=”standard” font=”arial” action=”like” width=”450″ height=”30″ position=”none”] Bilgeler 7, ever heard of this brand? After 3 years on the market their range of 7 wines (hence the name) and philosophy is starting to be known throughout Turkey. It’s a good idea for a wine name isn’t it? Simple.   Summer is fast approaching here and it is going to be hot soon so I am tasting another Rosé wine today, 7 Bilgeler Lassos 2012, and this is a great wine just to drink for pleasure with friends on the beach or around the pool. For great food and wine harmony try the carpacio of Langoustine served with cherry juice or pomegranate. The wine is clear and bright in colour, like a fruit drop, reds and light purples on the edge shows some good extraction, we are in the presence of a real Rosé. It has a simple, fruity nose with a touch of red rose and red fruits as the primary aromas. The mouth is fresh and soft with the right balance. With this 100% Shiraz you will enjoy your holiday. One more thing, you can visit the Bilgeler vineyards in Izmir and spend the night in one of their spacious bedrooms. The vineyard manager, Mr Akdeniz, will explain the story of the ‘domaine’ much better than me. Take a look at their website for more information. Have a good...
